Even if you don’t plan to buy The Taken King, if you’re playing Destiny you’ll still need up to 20GB of free hard-drive space.
That’s because Bungie is releasing an update a week before The Taken King’s September 15th launch that “enables The Taken King and enhances Destiny for all players.”
If you don’t download the update, you won’t be able to keep playing Destiny. Thankfully, Bungie has released system requirements for each system.
Xbox 360 owners will need around 10GB of free space. PS3 owners will need a whopping 20GB free during the installation process, but only 10GB after it’s done. PS4 and Xbox One owners will need 18GB. That’s a total of 30GB for PS3 and Xbox 360, and 60GB for PS4 and Xbox One. Yes, you can replace the drive that came with your system, but this really does make me a tiny bit bitter at Sony and Microsoft for not putting at least a terabyte into each of their machines at launch.
For gamers not purchasing the expansion, all this extra space is valuable real-estate. It’s understandable given the changes coming to the main game, but it’s kind of a drag at the same time. Of course, if you’re playing Destiny there’s almost no reason not to upgrade to The Taken King
